An Abscess is an infection. The infection can occur anywhere in the mouth. The classic "toothache" is caused by an abscess. The most common types of abscess involve the nerve of the tooth (requires endodontics) or the supporting bone and gums (requires periodontal treatment). Some abscesses involve both the nerve of the tooth and the supporting bone and gums. The primary symptoms of an abscess are pain and or swelling - but you can have an abscess which shows no symptoms. That type of abscess can only be diagnosed from an X-Ray. This is one of the reasons why regular radiographic examination is necessary to make sure your mouth is healthy. |
