As the article below and links at left demonstrate, dentistry is not just about cleanings and fillings. Heart patients need special dental care. As of 1993, more than 60 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease. Dental neglect and certain dental procedures can put heart patients at risk unless precautions are taken. During some dental procedures, such as teeth cleaning, bleeding may occur. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream and reach the heart, posing a serious risk. The bacteria may cause bacterial endocarditis, an inflammation of the heart valves or tissues. Your dentist should be made aware of any heart condition or abnormality so that appropriate antibiotic medication can be prescribed. Many people with heart murmurs, and those with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) will require antibiotic medication for each dental visit. Good dental hygiene and regular dental visits are key to preventing possible problems. |
